During controlled excavations in 1960-1961, a scrappy leather purse was found in The Cave of Letters on the Western coast of the Dead Sea. When unwrapped, this revealed the paperwork of a Jewish woman called Babatha, who had lived in the village of Maoza in Roman Arabia in the second century CE: marriage contracts, documents related to court cases, deeds of gifts are all included. Taken together, these documents provide a fascinating glimpse into the lives of a Jewish family in a newly created province of the Roman empire and give us distinctive material with which to tackle the question: What did it mean to be Jewish under Rome?
