The Cosgrove Memorial Library

The Cosgrove Library at the Synagogue, 4A Salisbury Road Edinburgh, is a collection of over a thousand books which originally formed part of the comprehensive library of Judaica of the late Rev. Dr. I. Kenneth Cosgrove, minister of Gartnethill Synagogue, Glasgow and Senior Jewish Chaplain to the Armed Forces in Scotland during the Second World War. After his death in 1973 his library was maintained and added to by his widow Dorothy Cosgrove MBE until her death in 1983, when it was presented to Edinburgh Hebrew Congregation by their sons Malcolm and John with the intention that additional books of Jewish interest would be added. This is indeed the case; whilst over the course of time some of the collection has been lost many new works have been acquired. Edinburgh Hebrew Congregation is pleased to regard the Library as a resource for the wider community; to arrange a visit please direct any enquiries to honsecehc@gmail.com in the first instance. The new catalogue has 24 subject categories including Judaism, Philosophy and Jewish Thought, Jewish History, British Jewry, Biographies, Israel and Zionism, Bible Studies, Anti – Semitism and the Holocaust, and more, and there is a master index; for the time being it can be accessed online using this link:
